Evening Rain 2020

Evening Rain

My Favourite time of the year in Queensland is October through February when evening storms become more frequent. Apart from the occasional damage that can occur, I like most the evening rain that sweeps through, cooling down the scorching summer heat.

'Evening Rain' captures that moment when the rain starts to fall, and you can feel the change in temperature and smell the water hitting the hot concrete. It's a scene that denies any chance of disaster or change, a scene where everything works out just fine as the rains roll through like they always have.

While painting in Warwick, extensive cloud coverage consistently passed overhead but never released a single raindrop. Speaking with the locals, this has been a common occurrence in the region for quite some time. With 67% of Queensland currently declared in drought, many areas struggle to find a water source. In January, Stanthorpe (40min from Warwick) began trucking 40 to 50 truckloads of water a day to supply clean drinking water to residents after the main reservoir reached a critically low level. The water levels in Storm King Dam stood at 18.1%. The water will reach its minimum operating level in 3 months if sourced from the dam.
